Investigating Workshops

Our range of ‘Investigating’ workshops offer advanced classes for students who are already trained to handle and look at gemstones but want to further their skills. Workshops are from 10:00–16:30 and all gemmological equipment is provided.

INVESTIGATING GEMSTONE TREATMENTS
Who is it suitable for?
A highly useful workshop for those working in the trade, it is recommended for those working in retail and those who buy, sell or value gems or gem-set jewellery, or for those who simply want to brush up on the latest treatments.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Intermediate gemmological knowledge (such as Gem-A’s Gemmology Foundation or Gemmology Diploma) or equivalent experience is required.
Course aims and content
This workshop focuses on the common treatments currently present within the gemstone industry. Treatments covered will include glass filling and heat treatment of corundum (ruby and sapphire), laser drilling and fracture filling of diamonds and diffusion treatments. You will learn how to detect these treatments using readily available instruments and techniques.

INVESTIGATING RUBY, SAPPHIRE & EMERALD
Who is it suitable for?
A highly useful workshop for those working in the trade, it is recommended for those working in retail and who buy, sell or value gems or gem-set jewellery, or for those who simply want to gain an in-depth understanding of these popular gems.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Intermediate gemmological knowledge (such as Gem-A’s Gemmology Foundation or Gemmology Diploma) or equivalent experience is required.
Course aims and content
This informative practical day will cover all aspects of these beautiful gems. You will begin by looking at their properties and learn how to identify natural ruby, sapphire and emerald, followed by their treatments (including lead-glass filling of ruby), their simulants and synthetics. You will handle and examine a wide range of these stones and, through hands-on observation and learned gem testing techniques, will gain experience and learn about ‘quality’ and ‘value’ and how they affect current market values of the stones.

JADE AND ITS IMITATIONS
Who is it suitable for?
This half-day workshop will help students learn more about an ancient gem material, and is essential for anyone working in the trade or in valuation.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Intermediate gemmological knowledge (such as Gem-A’s Gemmology Foundation or Gemmology Diploma) or equivalent experience is required.
Course aims and content
This workshop focuses on identifying jade and its numerous imitations, including bowenite, quartzite, steatite, plastic and glass.

ROUGH DIAMONDS
Who is it suitable for?
This exclusive workshop is delivered by Dennis Terry, an independent rough and polished diamond consultant and Rough Diamond Valuer for the UK Government Diamond Office. Terry has also worked as a Senior Government Diamond Valuer for South Africa, as a rough diamond valuer and negotiator for De Beers and as a diamond buyer in Sierra Leone.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Previous knowledge in diamonds is essential, such as Gem-A’s Diamond Grading & Identification Certificate or attendance at one of Gem-A’s one-day diamond workshops.
Course aims and content
Students will learn a basic understanding of rough diamonds and the diamond industry as well as a practical grounding in the handling and recognition of the various diamond qualities, shapes and colours. The workshop also covers related topics including conflict diamonds, KPCS Certification and rough diamond valuation and pricing theory.
