Understanding Workshops

Our range of ‘Understanding’ workshops offer students a hands-on introductions to the world of gemmology and diamonds, allowing them to learn new skills or brush up on the basics. Workshops are from 10:00–16:30 and all gemmological equipment is provided.

UNDERSTANDING GEMSTONES
Who is it suitable for?
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in gems.

Course aims and content
The perfect introduction to the fascinating world of gemstones, this tutor-guided practical session will enable you to become competent in the use of the tweezers and 10× loupe. You will handle some of the most popular gems and study their physical characteristics, whilst learning about origin and lore, physical properties and care and caution.

UNDERSTANDING PRACTICAL GEMMOLOGY
Who is it suitable for?
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in gems and who are considering studying our Gemmology Foundation and Diploma courses or who want to go on to gem testing in a retail or valuation environment.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Some previous basic gemmological knowledge is advantageous (such as the Understanding Gemstones workshop) but not essential.
Course aims and content
You will learn the principles and basic techniques of the most common and readily accessible instruments and testers, including the 10× lens, polariscope, spectroscope and refractometer. By the end of this workshop you will be able to use the equipment effectively and appreciate the value of each instrument in testing.

This workshop is the perfect introduction to Gem-A’s Gemmology Foundation and Diploma courses, but is also equally suited to those embarking on gem testing in a retail or valuation environment.

UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND GRADING
Who is it suitable for?
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in diamonds and diamond grading or those considering making a diamond purchase.
Skills, experience or qualifications needed
None
Course aims and content
This specialist workshop will focus on the key aspects of diamond grading and will give you a unique insight into the 4Cs of cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, as well as diamond certification. Led by an experienced diamond tutor, you will be guided through diamond theory before looking at the practical side of the 4Cs. You will also look at how these factors contribute to valuations and diamond certification.

This workshop provides the perfect foundation for those wanting to study our Diamond Diploma (leading to DGA status), or to embark upon a career in the retail diamond market.

UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND SIMULANTS
Who is it suitable for?

Skills, experience or qualifications needed
Some knowledge of diamond is advantageous but not essential.
Course aims and content
You will look at the key differences between diamond and its simulants, and learn how to recognize them as loose stones or in mounted jewellery. Using basic observation techniques and readily available instruments such as diamond and combination testers, participants will be taught to separate diamonds from all other imitations quickly and effectively, thus preventing costly purchase errors, and allowing informed purchases to be made. The two main commercially available simulants (synthetic moissanite and CZ) will be available for testing throughout the day, along with lesser seen stones that have been used predominantly in antique jewellery, such as colourless sapphire, zircon, synthetic spinel and paste.
