Online Learning

Our Online Distance Learning (ODL) programme is perfect for those who want to study from the comfort of their own home or for those or for those who don’t have access to a Teaching Centre.

Consisting primarily of online study, with a practical lab class with Gem-A or a GAPP of your choice, our ODL programme allows you to fit your gemmology study around your lifestyle.

You will be given your own login to access our online learning platform and will be assigned to a study group with other ODL students. You are guided through your course by a structured programme of study and each group has their own tutor who you can email for support and guidance with your learning. The course has set start and end dates and students are required to submit online assignments with set deadlines.

ODL LAB CLASSES
All ODL students must complete a practical lab class via Gem-A or through a Gem-A Approved Practical Provider (GAPP). Gem-A offers pre-arranged Gemmology Foundation lab classes, Gemmology Diploma lab classes and Diamond Diploma lab classes in the UK, USA and Japan — dates for these are available by clicking the links below.

HOURS OF STUDY
Standard Gemmology Foundation ODL students are advised to study six hours a week, whilst it is recommended that Foundation fast-track students study for eight to ten hours a week. Gemmology Diploma and Diamond Diploma ODL students are advised to study for six hours per week.

ONLINE RESOURCES
At Gem-A, we host our very own Online Learning Area that provides students with a peer based learning environment. Here you will not only submit your assignments but also have the opportunity to keep in touch with fellow students and your tutor as well as building a network of future contacts from around the world. Our online tutors are qualified gemmologists and will be on hand to answer any queries that you have.

Students will also have access to various resources and articles including the latest online edition of Gems&Jewellery, Gem-A’s trade publication that contains news, views and events in and around the industry.
