Renee Newman says most appraisers are not appraising diamonds unless they have a proper lab report from a recognized organization such as GIA or AGS.
Every time you sign a cert you are leaving yourself open to some sort of litigation if you do t have a disclaimer. Most of the time I am appraising mounted jewellry and estate pieces. So it isn’t feasible to unset the diamonds. So you need to have this in the cert that the pieces are appraised mounted.
In the case of synthetic diamonds not all gemologists can afford the equipment to test for synthetic diamonds and the cost to ship, insure and testing charges are prohibitive. Not every city in Canada has a lab with the proper equipment. So shipping out is likely.
Anyway, all this is to say I guess I will have to start only appraising those diamonds that come with lab reports. The other diamonds will have to be sent for further testing at the clients expense. Hate to see where this going to end up. Yikes!!
