Gemmologists from around the world will gather in London to attend the annual Gem-A Conference. The Conference boasts an incredible line-up of speakers including expert gemmologists from every area of the field. It is a must-attend Conference for anyone interested in gemmology.

What to expect:

  • An amazing line-up of speakers from all corners of gemmology
  • Network with some of the leaders in the field during the Conference breaks and the Saturday evening dinner

How to attend:

  • We recommend that you attend both days of the Conference but if you're short on time you can attend one day - the Saturday or the Sunday. Please take a look at the programme below to help you decide which day to attend.
  • Are you a member or a student? You will have received an 'access code' allowing you to access the members/student rate. Please note that these rates are different. Make sure that you have your membership/student number to hand.
  • Once you've selected your Conference registration type you can add on trips and workshops. Places for these are limited and we anticipate that they will sell out fast.

Graduation Ceremony and Presentation of Awards

The Royal College of Surgeons, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London

Graduates of the Gemmology Diploma and Diamond Diploma and their families are invited to attend the 2016 Graduation Ceremony and Presentation of Awards. The ceremony will be followed by a drinks reception in the Hunterian Museum and Surgeon’s Library for graduates and guests. If you have already received your Diploma results then you will have received an email inviting you to attend the Graduation Ceremony. The email contains a password to access the page. Are you a Gem-A graduate or a student? We invite you to attend the Gem-A Conference 2016. The Conference is an excellent opportunity to build on your knowledge and network with other gemmologists. For the first time we have introduced a special graduate and student price of only £50 per day. Check out our Eventbrite page for more information.


Two practical workshops will take place at Gem-A Headquarters in London. Both workshops will be held in the morning and repeated in the afternoon.

‘Coloured stone grading and pricing workshop’

This workshop will introduce new concepts in colour grading. Participants will have an opportunity to work with the World of Colour communication system and also to grade gems for colour, clarity and cut.

  • Alan Hodgkinson FGA, DGA, Author of Gem Testing Techniques:

‘Visual optics’

Alan Hodgkinson will host the his highly-popular Visual Optics workshop and will present the technique he has developed to allow examination of a cut gemstone at a moment’s notice using only the human eye.



Private viewing of the Natural History Museum’s mineral collection

Explore this breathtaking collection with a private viewing, hosted by Alan Hart FGA DGA, Gem-A CEO and former Head of Earth Sciences Collections at the Natural History Museum.

Private viewing of the Crown Jewels

You will be taken on a tour of the Tower of London, one of London’s finest landmarks and steeped in history, finishing with a private viewing of the Crown Jewels. You will be able to stop and admire each piece on this relaxed and fascinating tour.
