What have you been up to since completing your studies with Gem-A?
After completing my Diploma course in 2023, I went on to start my own business SecondHand Bling. I deal in antique and vintage jewellery, I sell via an online shop and in person events. Alongside this I also offer consultancy and appraisal services. Having been in the jewellery industry previously for 20 years in different roles, the diploma gave me the confidence to test the gemstones set in the pieces of jewellery I sell myself.
How has your gem-a qualification helped you in your career so far?
The gemmology diploma gave me a new career path. I started my journey at Gem-A knowing very little about gemstones but it very quickly became a passion and the more you learn the less you realise you know. It gave me a thirst for knowledge. I studied online but thoroughly enjoyed the in person week during the practical. The people I met enhanced my learning and opened doors to different companies I may not have otherwise been introduced to. That is why it is important for students to attend these and attend the conferences, networking is essential. All the staff at Gem-A are highly professional in their teaching and practice, this was a valuable guide.
What are the most important skills you have taken away from your gem-a studies?
Being able to confidently test and identify the gemstones in the diploma syllabus. An understanding of how and why crystals form, if they are natural, synthetic or imitation and the best way to cut them to enhance their beauty.
What would you say to anyone considering taking a gem-a course?
Go for it, it is a lot of hard work but incredibly rewarding. I am looking forward to continuing my learning journey.
