About the Role:

Gem-A is a world-renowned professional membership and awarding body specialising in gemmology.

Our qualifications are studied globally and our head office is in London’s historic diamond district, near Farringdon and Chancery Lane. We are looking to appoint a Collection Curator to work within the Education Department with responsibility for:

  1. Managing the gemstones teaching collection, the loan-stones collection, the diamond collection and the gemstones stock collection.
  2. Supporting the Gemmological Instruments shop with catalogue updates and annual audits.
  3. Supporting the Education team, working as assistant tutor.

Responsibilities:

Teaching collection:

· Collaborate with teaching team to assess needs and priority for the collection.

· Maintain and enhance existing teaching sets and loan stones sets.

· Create new teaching sets and loan stones sets.

· Conduct audits of the collection twice a year.

 

Stock:

· Catalogue and organise stocks.

· Assign useful specimens held in stock to teaching collection.

· Assess more valuable specimens and discuss storage options with management.

· Source gem materials for the collection and for Education.

 

Diamond collection:

· Conduct annual audits of the diamond collection.

· Maintain teaching sets.

 

Donations and purchases:

· Process donations and purchases made to/by Gem-A.

· Test, identify, catalogue and assign location to specimens.

 

Gemmological instruments

· Annual audit and maintenance of teaching instruments.

· Replacement and acquisition of instruments as required for teaching or research purpose.

· Responsible for coordinating the maintenance of microscopes and lab equipment.

 

Teaching

· Work as assistant tutor on some daytime in house courses when required.

· Create ways of presenting aspects of the collection when required at events, on Gem-A website or social medias.

 

· Support on-going Gem-A projects.

· Gem-A Diploma, FGA. (E)

· FEEG graduate. (D)

· Excellent gemmological knowledge and practical skills. (E)

· Cataloguing skills. (E)

· Organising skills. (E)

· Excellent accuracy and attention to detail. (E)

· High level of written and verbal communication skills. (E)

· Able to explain things clearly to students with little knowledge. (E)

· Able to work flexibly as part of a team. (E)

· Able to manage and prioritise own workload and to meet deadlines. (E)

· Problem solving skills to address ad hoc issues. (E)

Experience:

· Experience in testing and identifying stones. (E)

· Cataloguing experience. (E)

· Cataloguing experience in a similar field. (D)

· At least one year’s experience in the gem or jewellery industry. (D)

· Experience with database management systems. (D)

· Experience within a teaching environment, facilitating and delivering both face-to-face and online educational programs. (D)

· Experience of an educational platform such as Moodle. (D)

· Experience of photography and photomicrography. (D)

Employment type: Permanent

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week

Location: London, near Farringdon and Chancery Lane
