About the Role:

As part of its on-going commitment to progress, Gem-A is now looking to appoint a new full time gemmology tutor at its headquarters in London. Located in the heart of London’s historic jewellery district, this is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of a successful and growing global organisation, with excellent prospects for the right candidate.

Role Objectives 

To work within the Education Department in the role of gemmology tutor. This role reports to the in-house Tutor coordinator and includes teaching and supporting other tutors in the running of courses at Gem-A. 

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching on the daytime courses (Gemmology Foundation, Diploma, Diamond). 
  • Teaching introduction one day workshops, weekly or three-day lab classes.  (This will initially be as an assistant tutor under the guidance of a Gem-A lead tutor, with the aim of progressing to becoming a primary lead tutor.)
  • Preparing lesson plans, Powerpoint presentations, teaching materials prior to class. 
  • Being responsible for the teaching stones and instruments used in class.  
  • Being part of the development of workshops or short seminars and contributing to special projects. 
  • Liaising with Student Support Officer. 
  • Being part of creating new content for the on-line and in-house course and contributing to special projects.  
  • Assisting the collection curator in maintaining the collection, and in yearly collection and instrument audits. 
  • Ensuring classrooms are tidy, fully equipped and functional for each class start.  
  • Occasional evening cover tutoring duties may be required (this will be at prior agreement with additional remuneration).  
  • Any other projects as directed by the Tutor Coordinator or by senior management

Skills:

Essential: 

  • Excellent gemmological knowledge and practical skills with willingness to develop further knowledge and skills. 
  • Excellent demonstrable communication skills with a strong focus on delivering an engaging learning environment for students. 
  • Strong computer skills especially in MS Office packages. 
  • Good organisational skills. 

 

Advantageous: 

  • Understanding of different learning styles. 
  • Experience of photomicrography. 
  • Writing and editing experience. 

Experience:

Essential: 

  • Gem-A’s Diploma in Gemmology (FGA). 
  • At least one year’s experience in the gem or jewellery industry.  

 

Advantageous: 

  • Gem-A’s Diamond Diploma (DGA). 
  • FEEG graduate. 
  • Experience within a teaching environment, facilitating and delivering both face-to-face and online educational programs. 
  • Experience of an educational platform such as Moodle. 

 

Other: 

  • Ability to travel to represent Gem-A at trade event and conferences.

Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK without requiring an employer sponsorship visa.
