Description:

Join a Gemfields expert for a discussion on coloured gemstone mining, specifically focusing on Gemfields mines in Africa.

Delegates will examine unretouched images of the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, which is believed to be the world’s largest open-pit emerald mine, and Montepuez Ruby Mining in Mozambique, a newer mine that supplies approximately 50% of the world’s faceted rubies. They will gain insights into the geology of these deposits, site-specific extraction methods, and the appearance and handling of rough gemstones as they are prepared for the international market.

This session offers a unique opportunity for first-hand exposure to the formative stages of gemstones, which is essential for understanding their properties, valuation, and the processes that underpin the gem trade.
