About the Role:

As part of its on-going commitment to progress, Gem-A is now looking to appoint a new external assistant gemmology tutor (Visiting Tutor) at its headquarters in London to teach on evening courses. The right candidate will start with a view to becoming a lead tutor after training.

Evening courses take place at 21 Ely Place, EC1N 6TD on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm till 8.30pm, from September to July. Tutors are expected to commit to be at Gem-A at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class and to a whole term of teaching.

External tutors are self-employed and expected to invoice for their services on a monthly basis based on the fee offered by Gem-A for the role. They are responsible for their own tax.

Role Objectives 

This role includes supporting the lead tutor in the running of the gemmology evening classes at Gem-A for the Foundation and Diploma qualifications.  Assistant tutors also play a key role in supporting students in their learning during class.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the lead tutor during the evening courses (Gemmology Foundation, Diploma).
  • Support students during class by answering questions and helping them develop their practical gemstone testing skills.
  • Be responsible for the teaching stones and all instruments used in class. This includes selecting the stones with the lead tutor, monitoring stones during class and taking stock of the stone after class.
  • Take the register at the beginning of each class.
    Ensure classrooms are tidy, fully equipped and functional for each class start, and after class.
  • Mark homework, assessments and mock exams as directed by lead tutor.
  • Liaise with the Collections Curator and the Operations Team including the Student Support Officer.

Skills:

Essential: 

  • Gem-A’s Diploma in Gemmology (FGA).
  • Excellent gemmological knowledge and practical skills with willingness to develop further knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent demonstrable communication skills with a strong focus on delivering an engaging learning environment for students.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good time management skills.

Desirable: 

  • Gem-A’s Diamond Diploma (DGA).
  • FEEG graduate.
  • Understanding of different learning styles.

  • Self-motivated, organised and able to work independently
  • Passionate about gemmology and education
  • Creative and energic
  • Team Player

Experience:

Essential: 

  • At least one year’s experience in the gem or jewellery industry.

Desirable:

  • Experience within a teaching environment, facilitating and delivering educational programmes.

Christmas Closure
