Gem Testing Laboratory (GTL)


GTL Athens ATC was founded in 1992 and since 2001 moved in a 105 m2 on the 5th floor of its present address, property of GTL Athens. It is located at the centre of the City of Athens in the Jewellery Manufacturer’s District in Syntagma Square.

 It is within five minutes from three major Metro stations, and is easily accessible from most locations of the city. It comprises a secretariat, director’s office, classroom/lab and student’s waiting room.

Since 1992 it is estimated that more than 600 students have attended courses offered by GTL Athens. From those, more than 300 have been awarded the Foundation/Diploma in Gemmology, the Gem Diamond Diploma and the Gem Diamond Practical Certificate.

  GTL Courses


GTL Athens offers courses for the Foundation Certificate in Gemmology, the Diploma in Gemmology, the Diamond Practical Certificate and the Gem Diamond Diploma. Courses start in early October of each academic year and end in June before Gem-A’s examination dates. All examinations are held at the examination centers of the British Council in Athens.

Classes are in groups of up to seven students in order for each student to have for its own use of a microscope/refractometer, as well as to have a more direct contact with the tutor.

GTL’s tutors are passionate, knowledgeable and experienced gemmologists, equipped to deliver world-class gemmological education.

    His studies at the Geological Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, followed by a master level thesis on the subjects of geophysics and crystallography of gem minerals at Kent State University, USA, created the sparkle for his journey into the world of gems. These studies were completed with the awards of the Diploma in Gemmology and the Gem Diamond Diploma of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain.

    For the last 30 years he has been manufacturing and trading diamonds and other gems in Athens and Tel Aviv. He has been elected four consecutive times president of the Gemmological Association of Greece and official delegate of Greece at CIBJO’s conferences.

    He is the representative of the Education Department of Gem-A for Greece since 1992, teaching gemmology and diamond courses, and has been the author of several articles related to gemmology in major Greek magazines.

    As a result of his academic and professional career, Mr. Sergoulopoulos has gained extensive experience in the fields of evaluation, cutting and trading of diamonds and other precious stones.

  • Aristea Bakayianni-Sabou FGA, DGA

    Aristea’s professional career started in 1990 as a jewellery trader and gemstone specialist at the family jewellery business, in Piraeus, Greece. In 1991 she was awarded the Diploma in Gemmology of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Her studies were followed by one year studies in the fields of Post Graduate Gemmology, Gem diamond, History Design, Jewellery Design and Silversmithing at “Saint John Cash, City of London Polytechnic''. Her gemmological background was completed with the award of the Gem Diamond Diploma of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain.

    Aristea is a founder member of the Gemmological Association of Greece, four times elected as “Secretary General’ of the Association, and official delegate of Greece at CIBJO’s conferences.

    Since 1993 she has been teaching Gemmology and Gem Diamond courses at the  Institute of Professional  Training in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing MOKUME, tutor of Gemmology and Gem Diamond at GTL Athens, ATC, and has been the author of several gemmological articles at major Greek periodicals.



  GTL Classrooms


Students have access to all gemmological instruments required for the Gemmology/Gem Diamond courses, as well as to the use of the OGGI cut/rough Diamond Proportion analyser and UV-Vis spectrometer. Library facilities are also available after class hours. All gem species/varieties in various shapes and cuts are available in both rough and cut state for student inspection. As diamond stock is recycled 3 to 4 times per year, Gem Diamond students have the privilege to grade a very large quantity of diamonds during the diamond course, ranging in sizes from 0.30 ct to 6.00 ct.
