Alumni Information

Gem-A are proud to sponsor shows and Conferences offered by our partners around the world.

Conferences

The Gem-A Conference is one of the most prestigious events in the gem and jewellery calendar. Boasting an incredible line-up of speakers including expert gemmologists from every area of the field who gather in London each year. It is a must-attend Conference for anyone interested in gemmology.

Gem-A HQ Events

Gem Central is an informative gemmology evening for Gem-A members, students and guests.

Depending on the topic, the session may take the form of theory-based learning with industry examples. It may be a more practical session where students can gain additional practical experience, gem and mineral enthusiasts can handle other collections and members of the jewellery trade can examine some of the new synthetic or treated stones on the market.

Regardless of the type of evening, Gem Central is always an excellent opportunity to learn information, to share knowledge and connect with others in the gem and diamond community.

Meetings are held once a month at Gem-A Headquarters in London and run from 6pm until 7:30pm.

Guest Speaker, Shirley Mitchell: Assessing and Testing Mounted Gemstones

This workshop will cover many types of gemstone settings and the possible pitfalls when testing. The session will focus on gemstone observation using the loupe and microscope, as well as instruments like the spectroscope, refractometer and polariscope. Participants will uncover what tests can be used to confirm a gemstone’s identity despite the limitations of a mount, while learning how to overcome obstacles, such as being unable to see the girdle of a triplet in a rub-over setting. Practise your newfound skills with plenty of samples as well as worksheets to complete.
