The Birmingham Jewellery Quarter has recently been awarded World Craft City status, only the third jewellery related area to achieve such an award, Craig examines how this came about with reference to the history and makers who made this possible in a town which had a population of about 8000 in 1680 to a City which produced close to 40% of the countries’ jewellery, by the late 20th century.

At the upcoming event, hosted by the Gemmological Association Midlands Branch, chairman Craig O’Donnell will present a captivating talk on the history of the Jewellery Quarter. His insights will illuminate the evolution of this iconic district—from its Victorian heyday to its modern-day revival.

Craig is a valuer at the Birmingham Assay Office and is the curator of the Offices’ silver collection.

Where to find us: Fellows Auctioneers – Augusta House, 19 Augusta Street, Birmingham, B18 6JA.

Established in 1876, Fellows Auctioneers stands as one of the United Kingdom’s most venerable and respected auction houses. Nestled in the heart of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, Fellows has been a cornerstone of the city’s rich gemmological and commercial heritage for nearly 150 years. From its humble beginnings—when founder William Henry Fellows sold surplus bicycles by auction—the firm evolved into a specialist in fine jewellery, majestic diamonds, luxury watches, and designer pieces, holding over 100 auctions annually.

The Jewellery Quarter itself, with its roots stretching back to the 18th century, has long been a global hub for jewellery craftsmanship and diamond trade. Fellows’ presence here is no coincidence; the auction house has grown alongside the Quarter’s legacy, offering expert valuations and showcasing exquisite pieces that reflect the area’s artisanal excellence and industrial innovation.
